A clear view of the market

In the last few months, we’ve seen a number of VC’s report on the state of their portfolios since the market correction, in some cases in almost apologetic terms. We’ve also seen the traditional media having a bit of fun at the expense of VC and PE firms with some dated (but still pretty funny) stereotypes.

I won’t cover old ground about the correction, but I thought in this update it was worthwhile exploring a response to the question I’m most often asked about it: “What does this mean for my early-stage VC investments?”

Startup Spotlight: SoMin.ai

What do the words “smartphone” and “bikini” have in common?

Though it sounds absurd, the machine learning algorithms developed and deployed by Singapore-based SoMin.ai show us that it may be more than you think.

For a long time, traditional digital marketing efforts have felt like buying real estate. The maximum value would go to whoever is first to claim land or has the biggest budget. With SoMin’s use of machine learning, marketers can now spot and claim the “open land” (keywords, search terms, and customer segments) with data instead of luck.

Backed by the founder duo of Aleksandr Farseev and Kirill Lepikhin, SoMin leverages artificial intelligence and big data algorithms to create detailed insights into consumer behaviour, and use them to prescribe and automate marketing approaches.
