Introducing Tim Coates, Investible's Head of Investor Relations

As we begin the new year, we’re excited to grow the Investible community and expand the support we offer to our investors.

To spearhead this effort, we’re pleased to introduce our new Head of Investor Relations, Tim Coates. Based in our Sydney office, Tim will be supporting the growth of our investor network as the key point of contact for all our investors, limited partners, and our Club Investible community.

Tim joins the Investible team with over a decade of experience in wealth management and investor relations. His career has taken him across countries and industries including time spent in New York in white-glove construction and overseeing a Real Estate Investment Trust managing approximately USD$1bn in assets.

Firstly, tell us about your journey to date

I grew up jumping between Sydney, Canberra, and Rhode Island in the USA and eventually landed in Canberra for university, obtaining a Bachelor of Finance from ANU. From there, I went straight into the wealth management industry, advising on traditional portfolio investments across stocks and bonds, and acting as a buyer’s agent for investors in Sydney’s residential property market. Regardless of the asset class that I was focused on, I was fascinated by engaging with investors and helping them navigate complex situations.

In 2017, I jumped at an opportunity to move to New York and spent three years refining the sales and operations for a white-glove design & build renovation firm focused on high-end residential clientele. While I was captured by this challenge, after a few years I was keen to move back into the financial world. In late 2019, I joined the new management team of a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) that was embarking on a major restructuring process. We were introducing new management, a new strategic direction, and new operational processes, all while navigating the COVID pandemic for which NY was an early epicentre - professionally a very exciting challenge!

Following the birth of my daughter this year, it was time to start planning a return to Sydney and that’s when I came across Investible’s Head of Investor Relations role. I was instantly excited about the opportunity and knew that it was something I could add value to, and the rest is history!

What excites you about joining Investible?

I’m particularly excited about immersing myself in the Club Investible community. Having the opportunity to connect with such an exclusive list of investors and help them to achieve their goals is something I’m really looking forward to.

What do you love most about the startup ecosystem?

When it’s done well, the magic of investors and founders coming together to create something amazing. Given my background, I tend to think of the ecosystem from the perspective of an investor, and I love that the best start-up investors are not just providing capital, but also actively sharing their expertise, connections, and feedback. The more that investors can genuinely add value for founders, the more likely it is that a company will flourish. If facilitated well, investors and founders both get to walk away happy.

What's your personal philosophy?

“Don’t let perfect get in the way of good”

I always want to aim high and exceed in whatever I’m doing, but I am also cognisant of when it’s time to turn my attention to the next challenge and opportunity at hand.

What's something new you've learned recently?

Being a new dad, I’ve learned a whole raft of practical lessons in recent months. Something that became apparent very quickly was the importance of “wake windows” and making sure they’re well planned for… or else!

Something about you that might surprise people?

I am an accredited Advanced Open Water SCUBA diver. I learned to dive off the coasts of Bateman’s Bay and Sydney, and one of my favourite dive locations is South West Rocks, just north of Port Macquarie.
